Movie adaptation of Island of Fog for release in 2015 (April Fool's)
I've been chomping at the bit to announce that Island of Fog will be made into a movie! The first call about this came two months ago, and I've been sworn to secrecy ever since, but now that contracts have been signed I can finally let y'all know that Hal and his shapeshifter friends are coming to a cinema near you sometime in 2015.
With a budget of $130 million, and digital effects by the same team that created 2002's excellent Reign of Fire movie, this will at the very least look good on screen! But even great-looking movies need a good screenplay, and I've been told the writers will need to make a few changes to the story to better suit movie audiences. That's okay as long as the essence of the novel is there.
No news on young actors, but it's still early in the process. I do know who the director is but can't yet reveal his name. It's so frustrating not being able to blab!
Also in the works is a major publishing deal, which apparently is what happens whenever movie contracts are signed. I'm thinking about saying "no" and continuing to self-publish. From what I understand, when a property has been snatched up by a producer and a movie is in the works, publishers really don't bring much else to the table. They're kind of like sharks homing in on the smell of money. They just want a piece of the action. Why should I let them have a cut now when they had no faith in my books before?
Anyway, stay tuned for more detailed news when I get it. :-)
That is AWESOME!! Congratulations! Super pleased for you!
Wow! That's fabulous! Did you have an agent set this up or did they hunt you down? Someday I want to hear the whole story. Congratulations! Couldn't have happened to a better guy and I know we'll be taking a crowd to see it when it's released.
Wonderful news!
Congratulations! Were it me... I'd stick with self-pub. Why share the royalties with a company when you don't have to?
Fabulous news, Keith! Is the special effects team 'The Secret Lab'? I'm sure the movie will be great success. Can't wait to see it!
wow how amazing - can't wait to see it a huge congratulations you must be over the moon xxx
Wow, Keith, I'm so happy for you! That's absolutely amazing, but honestly, not at all surprising... this is very well deserved! Can't wait to see this adventure on the big screen!
Congrats!
Jana~
I'm excited to say the least! I can't wait! Congrats Keith!
Great news Keith. Congratulations.
Keith, you sly old dog! Can we look forward to seeing Sarah in a starring role? ;)
Okay, okay, I admit this news might not be quite as, er... truthful as it seems. It's April 1st, after all. I know some of you were playing along, so thanks for that, but for those who weren't, THANK YOU for your kind words and support even though I was telling pork pies. There's no movie deal, no $130 million contract, nothing, just little old me, my books, and a big fat April Fool's prank.
That said, I can truthfully say that my agent is still actively representing Island of Fog, and "it's still getting interest from some big names in the industry" (his words). This post is just a spoof realization of what we hope will happen one day in the future.
I messaged my agent privately this morning to check that our contract was still up to date and also to send him a link to this post, but I assumed he would get that it was a prank. Well, he didn't right away. His reply, typed line by line via Facebook chat while I wasn't there, went something like this...
hey there!
yes, we do still have a contract.
Twilight Zone and Logan's Run are keeping me busy
however, I did get interest in your work from [hidden]
so we will see what happens
I would like to at least get the first book into screenplay format
what the hell??
are you serious!
HANG ON
we should talk...now
give me a call
I don't understand...why didn't you say anything?
We had a good laugh about this afterward, but for a moment there, his heart started thumping pretty hard. :-I
Oh, and the "Sarah" Frederick is referring to in his comment is another spoof I did years ago. She was the new moderator for my EnidBlyton.net website. She was very pretty, but really terrible as a moderator.
Ah, you merry prankster. I was buying into this one, too (totally fell for George Takei's Star Wars casting "news"). I am apparently much more gullible than I ever would have imagined. ;)
If it makes you feel any better, Roger, I bought into George Takei's news as well, although mainly because you posted it on your page. It was believable enough, though. Really, people should only feel foolish if the so-called news is outlandishly weird. I remember a British TV show in the 1980 called That's Life, which reported on a newly discovered creature called the Lirpa Loof. People lapped it up.
So I take it as a compliment that you and others felt a movie option for my books was even remotely feasible. :-)
As much as I wanted this to be true, I sniffed this out right away. Nice try!
In other news, Keith just signed a deal unleashing Island of Fog tattoos and a line of Hal inspired cookware. Actually, it's more of a spokesdragon deal where Hal endorses a line of flatware that can really withstand the heat.
Your move, Robinson!
NOOOO, you totally got me!!!! That was mean!!!!
There's also going to be a line of Island of Fog dehumidifiers!
LOL! Dehumidifiers... Now, that's a great idea for a fog-smothered island. :-)
Sorry Monica. And sorry everyone else as well. I won't do this again, I promise, until at LEAST April 1st 2014.
It would make a fabulous movie series. I was on cloud nine. What a meaniekins you are!
You had me. Still, I would love to see Island of Fog, the movie. Best of luck to you and your agent shopping it around!
If I were wooing a group to give you a movie deal, I would pitch it as one movie based on the first two books. There is so much fog and gloom in the first book that I think it would overwhelm the visual nature of a motion picture. The fog is not a problem in the book, and could be used wonderfully at moments in a movie. I just think it's too much to look at for an hour and a half.
You could even use the gloom of the fog like the movie version of "The Wizard of Oz" used the transition from black and white to color to add impact to the strange new world that the characters enter.
That's a great way to look at it, Steve. I can really see the "Oz effect" of having the dull fog open up to brilliant sunshine halfway through. In fact, that was my vision way back in 2002 when I started writing it, although of course I'd planned on that "stepping into the light" scene at the end of the book (which is what happens). I like the idea of the first two books combined for a movie. The only problem is that there's probably way too much material there for a movie!
Yes, a two-book movie would take a lot of chopping. But you might be able to do it with a two-hour movie and combing some characters from "Labyrinth."
If there is a movie I'd make an awesome Abi and I can't wait for the movie why can't it be 2015 yet!
I would love a movie for a good visual on characters. By the way love your books!
Darn. I thought there was going to be a movie. I wish you maybe consider making one. That would make me and many others very happy. Please consider that. Please get back to me soon. 😉 I'm your number one fan.
Aubrey, it's not up to me. Trust me, I've considered it. ;-) But it's up to big movie producers who want to spend tens of millions of dollars to make it happen.
:( why did you do this to me! I was so hoping there was going to be a movie! But I aslo wanted to sayi really loved your island of the fog books and I am working on a little project my self ;) .I wish you luck on getting the books into a movie! ; )
